1. A Plain-Language Summary
The rest of this Policy has the detail. In short:
- We never see or store your card number. Payments are handled entirely by Stripe, Affirm, and similar payment providers.
- We do not sell personal information. Ever.
- Our kiosks have no camera and no microphone.
- Our advertising is aimed at places, not people. No ad on our network is targeted using your personal information.
- Our partners can see revenue and which kiosk produced it — never who rented a battery.
2. Information We Collect
What we collect depends on how you interact with us.
When you rent a battery
Renting is a one-time transaction. You are not required to create an account. At checkout, our payment provider collects your email address and payment details; if you pay with a mobile wallet such as Apple Pay, only your email is involved. Your payment information goes directly to the payment provider — see Section 4.
We record the operational facts of the rental itself — which kiosk, rental start and return times, and the resulting charge — so the kiosk can function and bill correctly. Today, a rental is a standalone record; we do not build a rental history tied to your identity.
If you receive an emailed receipt for a rental, Voltage Nexus retains the email address associated with that receipt for our records. In other words, when a receipt is sent to you, the email address it is sent to is stored by us for that purpose. Aside from a receipt email handled this way, the email and payment details you enter at checkout are held by our payment providers rather than by Voltage Nexus (see Section 4).
When you use the mobile app (upon launch)
The Voltage Nexus mobile app is not yet available. When it launches, this section will describe it in full and take effect at that time. As currently planned, the app will require an account and will collect your name, email address, and phone number, and will use your device location to help you find nearby kiosks. This Policy will be updated to reflect the app’s actual features before it is released. See Section 3 for how location is intended to work.
When you become an Infrastructure Partner
Partner signup collects your name, address, email, and phone number. Sensitive financial and tax information — bank details, card numbers, tax identification — is collected directly by our payment providers, not by Voltage Nexus. We are redirected to the provider for that step and never see or store it. Each partner receives a 1099 annually for tax reporting.
When you visit the website
As with most websites, we collect standard technical information such as device and browser type, IP address, approximate location derived from IP, and basic product-interaction events, used to operate and improve the site.
3. The Kiosk and the App — What the Hardware Does
Because our kiosks are physical devices in public venues, we want to be specific about what they do and do not do.
What the kiosk does not have
Voltage Nexus kiosks have no camera and no microphone. They do not photograph, record, or listen to anyone. They do not perform audience measurement and do not estimate who looked at the screen or for how long.
Bluetooth capability (currently disabled)
Each kiosk contains a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) component capable of detecting nearby Bluetooth devices. This capability is turned off and is not in use. We do not currently collect device-proximity or people-counting data of any kind. If we activate this feature in the future, we will update this Policy first and describe exactly what it collects and why, before any such data is gathered.
Location
A kiosk does not have GPS and does not determine its own location. It knows only the venue address a partner assigns to it in our system.
What the kiosk transmits
Kiosks maintain a real-time (24/7) telemetry connection with our platform to operate. This reports operational events — battery rentals and returns, battery count, power status, and connectivity status. This is machine-operational data about the kiosk, not surveillance data about people.
App location (upon launch)
When the mobile app launches, it is planned to use your device location for one purpose: helping you find a nearby kiosk when your phone is running low. As designed, the app would begin using location only when your battery falls to roughly 30% or below, in order to send a notification offering directions to the closest kiosk. This feature does not exist yet. When it does, this Policy will be updated to describe precisely how location is used, whether it is stored, and how you can turn it off, and you will control it through your device’s permission settings.
4. Payments and Payment Security
All payments — battery rentals, partner purchases, and financed purchases — are processed by third-party payment providers, currently including Stripe and Affirm, and other providers we may use from time to time.
Voltage Nexus does not see, handle, or store full payment card numbers. Card data is transmitted directly to the payment provider over an encrypted channel. The provider processes the payment and confirms to us only that it succeeded, at which point the kiosk dispenses a battery.
The non-return charge works the same way. Voltage Nexus tracks how long a battery has been out; when it is returned, we tell the payment provider the duration and amount, and the provider charges the card originally used. The charge is capped at $50, reached at 12.5 hours from the time of rental. The payment method is held by the payment provider, not by Voltage Nexus.
5. How We Use Information
We use the information we collect to:
- Process rentals, purchases, and payments
- Operate and monitor the kiosks and network
- Provide customer and partner support
- Detect and prevent fraud and abuse
- Calculate and pay partner revenue
- Improve the platform, kiosks, and software
- Send transactional and service messages, and important service updates
6. What We Deliberately Do Not Do
Some of the most important parts of this Policy are about what we choose not to collect or do:
- We do not sell personal information.
- We do not target advertising using personal information. Advertising on the Voltage Nexus network is aimed at kiosks and venues — places, not people. Our ad system runs no tracking of individuals. Any performance an advertiser measures (for example, scans of a QR code in their own ad) is tracked on the advertiser’s side, not by us.
- We do not let partners see who rented a battery. A partner’s dashboard shows revenue generated and which kiosk generated it — nothing that identifies a renter.
- We do not operate cameras or microphones on our kiosks.
- We do not contact renters who fail to return a battery; the capped charge is handled automatically through the payment provider.
7. How Information Is Shared
Voltage Nexus does not sell personal information. We share information only in these limited circumstances:
Service providers
We rely on a small number of vendors to operate, and share only what each needs to do its job: our payment providers (currently Stripe and Affirm); our web platform provider, which hosts the website, dashboard, and application infrastructure; and our shipping provider for fulfilling kiosk and battery orders. We may add comparable providers from time to time.
Legal requirements
We may disclose information where required by law, subpoena, or other valid legal process, or to protect the rights, safety, or property of Voltage Nexus, our partners, or the public.
What our providers keep
Our payment providers store the payment and contact information you give them at checkout, under their own privacy policies. Our cellular connectivity provider handles the kiosks’ network connection and does not retain personal information about renters or partners. Our kiosk manufacturer has no remote access to units after delivery.
8. Data Retention
We retain information for as long as needed to provide the Services and for the purposes described in this Policy — including operating the network, supporting partners, paying revenue, preventing fraud, and meeting legal, tax, and accounting obligations. Partner records, in particular, are retained on an ongoing basis to administer the partner relationship and comply with tax reporting.
Where we no longer need information, we take reasonable steps to remove or de-identify it.
9. Security and Access
All data is protected with industry-standard encryption (TLS) in transit and at rest.
Internal access is restricted by role. Administrative access is limited, and access to renter or partner data is granted only on a need-to-know basis.
No system can guarantee absolute security. While we use reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards, we cannot warrant that information will never be subject to unauthorized access.
10. Your Privacy Rights
Subject to applicable law, you may request access to, correction of, or deletion of personal information we hold about you by contacting us at support@voltagenexus.com. We may need to verify your identity before acting, and we may retain certain information as required for legal, tax, or fraud-prevention purposes.
Partners: we can delete your partner profile on request, which removes the information we hold about you from our systems. Doing so ends your ability to participate in the Voltage Nexus partner program.
Renters: because a battery rental is a one-time transaction, Voltage Nexus does not build a stored profile about you. The email and payment information you provide at checkout are held by our payment providers under their own privacy policies, and a request to remove that information should be directed to them.
State privacy rights
Residents of certain states — including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, and Texas — have specific rights regarding their personal information, such as the rights to access, correct, delete, and obtain a copy of it, and to be free from discrimination for exercising those rights. Florida residents have rights under applicable Florida law. To exercise any of these rights, contact us at support@voltagenexus.com and we will respond as required by the applicable law. Because we do not sell personal information, we do not offer an opt-out of sale.
11. Children’s Privacy
The Services are not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.
Our kiosks are located in a range of venues, some of which families frequent. A kiosk does not ask for or verify age; anyone with a valid payment method can rent a battery. Voltage Nexus stores no profile about the person who rents — aside from a receipt email retained as described in Section 2 — and the payment details entered at checkout are collected by our payment provider, not by us. If you believe a child under 13 has provided personal information to us directly, contact us at support@voltagenexus.com and we will take appropriate action.
12. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Policy from time to time. Material changes — including any activation of features described here as not yet in use, such as the mobile app or the kiosk Bluetooth capability — will be reflected here before those features collect information. Updates become effective when posted, and continued use of the Services after an update constitutes acceptance.
